Thanks,
Jan, I appreciate that ID, and I see that you have good credentials. Could you please tell me which features of my images helped you decide on it? I had considered A. gladiaria as well F. subgothica.

Nancy, There are several c
Nancy,

There are several characters that help separate A. gladiaria from any described North American species of Feltia:

1. In A. gladiaria on the inner side of subterminal line there is a row of well developped elongated dark dots between veins. No species of Feltia has such row of dots. Some specimens of F. subgothica and F. tricosa may have few dots but dots in these species if present are much weaker than in A. gladiaria.

2. In A. gladiaria the anal vein of forewing (the one that runs along posterior margin of the wing) is outlined by whitish scales and this outlining contrasts strongly with the ground color of forewing. In species of Feltia this vein is not outlined.

3. The orbicular spot in A. gladiaria is complete and circled by dark line, while in Feltias orbicular spot is open from side of costa.

4. In A. gladiaria antennae of males are broadly pectinate and differ right away from serrate antennae of Feltia's males.

Thanks,
Jan, I appreciate all that info. I just love Bug Guide because I get such wonderful science lessons!
