Female Valley Carpenter bee?
This appears to be a female Valley Carpenter Bee, Xylocopa varipunctata (spelling?). Smoky (not violet or black) wings, and lack of any iridescent coloring on the body suggests this species.

Thanks, Eric, that's the one I'm after. Peter Bryant, another Bug Guide contributor, and I are building a Natural History of Orange County website. Our male Valley Carpenter Bee sorely needed a mate.
