crab footed fly - Ochthera - Female
Rockford, Lockwood Park, stream near bridge to Children's Farm, Winnegabo County, Illinois, USA

Size: 4 mm
The front legs are very muscular in contrast to the mid and rear legs. The femur, tibia and tarsus form a crab claw like structure. The fly was on the shallow margin of a stream that passes through the park. It appeared to be hunting (?) in the mud and weeds. What curious legs!

The behavior and habitat in the Ochthera Info section of BugGuide match the spot where I found them and their activity. I was looking for dolis, perhaps the Ochthera were also...
