Has been reared on various genera of Rosaceae, Rhamnaceae, and Ericaceae.

The population from southern California is small in size and has a relatively high percentage of the moths with a brown median area of the forewing in both sexes. The moths from central and northern California are larger and have about one-third as many specimens with the brown median area.

This species may be separated from H. sulphuraria by the smaller, unicolorous discal dot, when present, on the upper surface of the forewings.
