I found these caterpillars in large numbers feeding and burrowing into the seed pods of velvetleaf. I think they are
Helicoverpa zea
.

Can you post how you know that this is H. zea
rather than Heliothis virescens? The dark bands on A1 and A2 seem to fit the description of virescens in Owlets, pg 346
