I guess fly pictures aren't generally submitted here because they're not the most beautiful of bugs, but I though it might help the guide. I don't know anything about fly identification, though, or how many similar species are in this area.

Sarcophagidae - Sarcophaga?
Sarcophagidae - Sarcophaga?

Agreed.
Three racing stripes and a red tail light.

characters not unique to that genus
but Sarcophagidae for sure

Thanks, Brad. Good to know.
Don't remember where I got it, but no one's ever flagged the comment before. Will stand down.

Possible mischaracterization from a field guide
I know Kaufman's is misleading in this regard, as it somewhat implies Sarcophaga are characterized by red eyes and tail (which they are, but other genera have those same traits). Not sure if this mischaracterization is in other sources, but I think it has been cited numerous times on BugGuide.

I'm not really sure how many of our Sarcophaga photos are correctly ID'd.

That's probably where I got it.
I've certainly used it many times before. I'd guess any of these IDed to genus or species has likely been held to a relatively high standard. Of a quick look the 700+ IDed just to family, I don't think we're in terrible shape.

The site has more than 75,000 images of flies.
Some of them are real lookers, particularly among the syrphids aka hover flies aka flower flies. Elsewhere, many horse flies have colorful, intricate and attractive eyes. Browse around a bit!
