...I am about 90% sure that this is...
Acmaeodera bowditchi. They tend to be a bit larger, around 10+ mm, but they are variable in size and in the degree of maculation.

 
Identity
And you would be 100% wrong--ha! But hey, without the specimen, more likely a series from the same place in hand, I cannot make a positive ID.

 
Update
Looking at this image again and comparing it to a series of 40 specimens in my identified collection, now I will say it is Acmaeodera diffusa, a common and variable species, though largely, if not entirely, restricted to the Great Basin.
