micro-mystery - Coniopteryx - Male
Kinbasket Lake, British Columbia, Canada
June 13, 2013
Size: ~2 mm
I find myself embarrassingly stumped by this little beast. The tarsi are 5-segmented, 2 pairs of wings, >20 antennal segments, mandibulate mouthparts (at least palps visible). I am leaning towards a peculiar microhym, even though I admit the wings do not hinge together or strike me as particularly hym-y and keying to family becomes troublesome as there don't appear to be tibial spurs. My other guess was a microcaddisfly that lost its scales while stored in ethanol...

Collected in a malaise trap set adjacent to Kinbasket Lake.

Thanks in advance for any ID help!

Confusing little critters indeed! I personally would vote with you on the microcaddisfly (I agree that it doesn't feel like a hym, especially with those antennae and wings), but I'm excited to see an expert weigh in...

The venation is best seen on the middle image above when viewed obliquely from the side; at least on my computer screen.

great!
Thanks everyone!
I didn't realize there were neuropterans with as few wing cells as this!

Are the photos worthy of moving, or should I "frass" them?

Me either - that's why I ruled out Neuroptera too! Good learning experience!
