Are they actually rare, like the genus name suggests?

I have seen specimens from half a dozen localities but none with over a couple specimens in the same night.

I haven't actually collected it so it's hard for me to say. When Gidaspow did her revision she had 68 specimens to work with. I would say uncommon to rare but if you look in the right place at the right time they are probably "frequent". Cache Co seems to be the place to look.
