cutworm? - Spodoptera dolichos

cutworm? - Spodoptera dolichos
The Villages, Sumter County, Florida, USA
October 24, 2013
Size: 4 cm
This fat, smooth caterpillar has striking tapering black diamond design on light brown. Does not resemble caterpillar of any butterflies / moths ID'd in the yard, which include a variety of skippers, sulphurs, Monarch, Viceroy, Buckeye, and the like. Quick search suggests generic "climbing cutworm". This was in a residential garden in mid-day, no vegetables only perennials. Could have originated in purchased mums. Have only seen the one.
