Autumn Yellow-winged Grasshopper - Arphia xanthoptera - male

Autumn Yellow-winged Grasshopper - Arphia xanthoptera - Male
Gage County, Nebraska, USA
October 17, 2013
Size: Over 1 inch
I'm thinking this is a very dark Autumn Yellow-winged Grasshopper -- Arphia xanthoptera. Found sunning itself on a west facing road ditch bank. Quite sure on the id of a bigger one found in a pasture 1/2 mile west that was much lighter with very pronounced pronotal crest. Lighter one had orange wings.

yes, that's what he is
The hind wing color varies from yellow to red, but yellow is most common. The darker colors seem to occur mostly in the west (i.e. in NE, KS & OK). The body color varies a lot too. I think males are more often this dark than females though.
