Beetle under bark of a burned toyon - Metoponium

Beetle under bark of a burned toyon - Metoponium
Claremont, Los Angeles County, California, USA
October 15, 2013
I found several of these beetles under the bark of a burned Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia) at the Claremont Colleges' Bernard Field Station. They were very zippy and scurried back under the bark too quickly photograph in situ, so I collected one and chilled it in the refrigerator to take its photo. Any information about its identity will be greatly appreciated!
