moth - Hyppa

moth - Hyppa
Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada
July 2, 2012
Size: 2 cm?

Moved
Moved from Common Hyppa.

I think this is Hyppa contrasta but am not an expert. Pretty sure H. xylinoides is out of range. H. brunneicrista males have wide antennae and I'm not sure if H. contrasta can have antennae this wide so I'm moving to genus.

Good move
Seems like a good move until an expert ways in.

Thanks for checking up on this, Steve. We're all learning.

9579 – Hyppa contrasta?
There is a similar image here from the same location placed under H. contrasta. I am not sure why it's not H. xylinoides other than looking at BOLD it does seem that xylinoides is out of range and Pacific Northwest Moths does not appear list that species. See info on H. contrasta at Pacific Northwest Moths here.

Edit - Info page on BugGuide for H. xylinoides says that it it does not range west of Manitoba.

Hmm...Thanks for pointing this out Steve
I can't seem to see any difference in the markings between contrasta and xylinoides. Is range enough to ID?
Could be a wanderer...
