Syrphid Fly (Tribe Syrphini)? - Syrphus opinator
Pleasanton, Alameda County, California, USA
October 26, 2013
I've been reviewing other BugGuide submissions and Syrphid Fly (Tribe Syrphini) looks good or close.

What Ron said - black border
What Ron said - black border on the abdomen - combined with marginated abdomen, straight R4+5 vein, continuous band on tergite 4, and non-curved bands on tergites is Eupeodes (Metasyrphus).

Totally yellow face.
Totally yellow face. Markings on tergite 2 reaching side margin. Syrphus opinator.

Very good! Eupeodes sp.
The other candidate in Tribe Syrphini is Syrphus. Your nicely photographed fly shows that a black margin or border separates the top of the abdomen from the bottom. The absence of a band would mean the light color would wrap around from top to bottom, and that would be Syrphus. Oh, and it's a girl. We know that because they eyes are smaller, so they don't touch at top center.

Eupeodes sp.
Much thanks.

My pleasure.
I do love to expound.
