Sphinx moth - Aellopos titan

Sphinx moth - Aellopos titan
Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma, USA
October 28, 2013
I have been chasing this moth for about 2 weeks and finally snapped a single photo today. I saw it once while it was raining and since I wasn't taking photos that day, I looked into its identity. The following week a co-worker saw it while I was off, and I got a brief glimpse again today. Thankfully, I had my camera ready for this photo. I'm feeling good about it being in the genus Aellopos, and if that is correct, it is the first entry for the genus for Oklahoma. Any thoughts?

Aaron,

FWIW, this is a new record for Tulsa County.

Thank you for the information!
If I see this moth again, I will capture it. I figure it won't harm anything to grab it for a full ID this late in the year.

Aellopos titan?
Agree on the genus - perhaps Aellopos titan? The upper edge of the hindwing looks particularly bright on this guy, and Hodges describes titan as a strong flyer and gives more records across eastern North America than the other Aellopos species he lists. At first I thought the abdominal pattern looked more like tantalus, but the plates in Hodges show the same checkered pattern in all four of the species that show up in the US. Let's see if another person agrees?

Fantastic!
I agree, Aellopos sp., and in my eyes this looks most certainly like Aellopos titan. A. titan looks like the one most in-range for Oklahoma as well.

Thanks!
I appreciate you both looking at this one for me. It was a fun late year find... and a first for me!
