Ceratomia hageni? - Ceratomia hageni

Ceratomia hageni? - Ceratomia hageni
Beiser Field Station, Washington County, Ohio, USA
October 23, 2013
Size: 7-8cm
Found on the ground on a cool, rainy night. Pupated soon thereafter. Was unable to associate with a particular host plant, but osage orange, ash, spicebush and maple trees (to name a few) are all found in the general vicinity.

Moved- Ceratomia hageni
Moved from ID Request.

I am fairly certain that you are correct, this does appear to be Ceratomia hageni. This is an interesting larval sighting for southeastern Ohio, I think the range of this species is wider than previously thought (i.e. as outlined in Tuttle 2007).

thanks
Ryan - thanks for the quick ID. The station has extensive fencerows of Osage Orange which have been in place for probably over 100 years. It's not easy to sample them, but we'll have our eyes out for these in the future - this one was found because it fluoresces under UV and we'll want to look more at that. Also, we're hoping to rear it out to further confirm the ID. Thanks again.
