Syrphus or Eupeodes? - Syrphus opinator

I have lots of photos of this lovely fly, which I used to tag as Syrphus but now I am afraid might be Eupeodes. Why is that the more I learn, the less confidence I have? This photo taken in a garden on Solidago. As always, your help is much appreciated!

What Ron said - black border
What Ron said - black border on the abdomen - combined with marginated abdomen, straight R4+5 vein, continuous band on tergite 4, and non-curved bands on tergites is Eupeodes (Metasyrphus).

Right the second time: Eupeodes
The light stripes don't wrap around from the top of the abdomen to the bottom, but are instead trapped by a black margin or border. Your photo shows this feature very clearly.

Glad to help. There are a lot of simple "tricks" in ID.
However, they're often hard to find. Looking at a lot of posts and related comments reveals them.
