Bee or fly with ambush bugs - Odontomyia

Bee or fly with ambush bugs - Odontomyia
Bear River MBR, Box Elder County, Utah, USA
August 31, 2006
Is this is a bee or a fly. Does any know? It's sharing flower space with two mating Ambush Bugs. Would an ambush bug attack this large of an insect? At one point this fly was actually standing on one of the ambush bugs.

Moved
Moved from Soldier flies.

Stratiomyidae: Odontomyia
This is a species of Odontomyia, but can't be identifed from this view

Moved
Moved from Psellidotus.

Size
As you can see from this image, Jagged Ambush Bugs will attack just about anything they can grab onto:

Looks like one of the Soldier Flies
I don't know which one, but compare with the images in the guide.

Thanks...
I've never even heard of a Soldier Fly so I appreciate the information. I guess the fly's pretty lucky it didn't become lunch for the two ambush bugs.
