hard to ID to species
Would have to examine genitalia, and of course hope for a male.

Serica, yes (sorry I thought this was already at the genus level). Very speciose genus in CA; a species-level ID may require examination of genitalia unless someone with a better feel for the local fauna can narrow it down by geography.
