ant - Lasius neoniger

ant - Lasius neoniger
Plum Island, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA
November 6, 2006
Size: 3.5mm
Found a small colony under a rock in the dirt close to a salt marsh.

Moved
Moved from Lasius.

L. neoniger
The coloration fits perfectly.

Richard, thanks for explaining the differences that make this a Lasius sp.

OOPS! Lasius sp. - worker
Five visible gaster tergite, the latter with a distinct acidopore (thanks to the white background), betray a Formicine ant. As the scale is hidden by 1rst urotergite from this angle, this individual can easily be mistaken for a Tapinoma at the first glance.
There is no other possibility but Lasius in this subfamily. This one species is indeed peculiar with its light brown color (most have either yellowish or dark brown workers).

Odorous ant
Thanks Eric for the id!

Dolichoderinae?
I'm thinking this critter belongs in the subfamily Dolichoderinae.
