Male March Fly - Bibio longipes - male

Male March Fly - Bibio longipes - Male
Near Ruraldale, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA
November 5, 2006
Talk about a misnomer! These March Flies were swarming in November. Occasionally they would light on the ground and two males—or even three—would get into a shoving match. I also found a lone male at a Sugar Maple seep.

November Fly
There are three species of Bibio that fly in the fall. B. slossonae (dark hair), B. longipes (light hair), B. autumnalis (description unknown to me).

Thanks
Thanks for commenting, John. The hairs on this fly appear to be light.

The lighting can play tricks, but particularly on the legs the hairs appear very light in color.
