It seems a little out of its range.

In your area there are three species in this Genus that are possibles. I do not feel competent to make a species call. However, the presence of that white tail make me lean toward your opinion and that of Nancy.

The BugGuide info page for this species Dolichomia thymetusalis - Spruce Needleworm Moth - Hodges#5529 indicates it ranges south to NC http://bugguide.net/node/view/429364

And MPG, where it falls under the genus Hypsopygia, shows it in your state as well http://mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu/species.php?hodges=5529&state=NC

So your ID is likely correct.
