Spot-Tailed Dasher - Micrathyria aequalis - Female
Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, Hidalgo County, Texas, USA
October 22, 2006
Found on vegetation on a cool day. Identified by trip leaders (below) as a female of this species.

This photograph was taken during a field trip as part of the 2006 Texas Butterfly Festival in Mission, Texas. This was the odonate trip led by Josh Rose and Bob Behrstock.

Nice image
Any idea why the wings are held as they are? I thought it might be common for the species, or have something to do with the cold weather.

Wing posture
As I recall, it was just flexing momentarily, perhaps preparing to take off due to disturbance from the photographers clustered around it! I have several other photos of this individual, and the wings are held flat. I was going to post one of those, but I liked the composition of this one the best.

Interesting.
I wondered if this were "anti-obelisking", since they use that to compensate for high temperatures. In my experience, they often squat down like a fly when I get too close, prior to taking off.
