Birch tree larva - Endomychus biguttatus

Birch tree larva - Endomychus biguttatus
Hudson, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
November 10, 2006
Size: about 5 mm
Found crawling slowly four or five feet up a birch tree. I first thought this was a net*wing beetle larva. It reminded me strongly of Ly*cus larvae I have found on my two recent trips to New Mexico. However, I now see that this one has a much different head. Has an upper and lower row of fleshy backwards-curved lobes on each side, although the lower ones are difficult to see in these views. This one is carrying a bunch of pale mites around the base of its head.

How nice!
New species for me. Someday maybe I'll encounter an adult. Thanks, Belov.
