Was this relatively small?
Closer to one inch than to two? It strikes us as one of the Lichen moth cats, Hypoprepia. Was it eating the lichen in the picture?

 
Yes,
it was probably 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 in. And yes, it sure does look as if it were eating lichen! It was on a fence rail that had lots of lichen on it. Because I don't know much about lichen eating moth cats, I did not associate the cat with the lichen when getting the pic. It did seem to be different from silvery checkerspot (Chlosyne nycteis) cats that I often see in Wildwood.
