Halicitid - a series and ID? - Augochlora pura - female

Halicitid - a series and ID? - Augochlora pura - Female
Doddridge County, West Virginia, USA
November 11, 2006
Is an Augochlora pura female? It was hiding in a little hole in a very large rock (about 30") right next to our last smallest Aster. The info page says they burrow in wood. Do they overwinter in wood?

This image was taken at 11:38 am this morning after a rain shower. I will note the times the subsequent images were taken.

this is Augochlora pura
mated females overwinter in wood

maybe she was merely seeking temporary shelter from the rain

Great!
I'm happy to learn that the mated females will overwinter in wood. There have been so many on the nearby Aster for the last few days and I have seen several mating and/or competing for pollen. There were also some hiding in a crack in the rock and a metallic green one in the open on the rock.

Thanks for the information and the ID confirmation.
