Could that be a queen they are attending to? There is freshly excavated wood chips in the area. Off the left-hand side is some white-ish looking things (bugs or fungus) that I found curious as well.

Thanks for your help with this. Any idea of what the large "thing" that looks enclosed in a clear bag is?

 
The large "thing" is a scale insect (Coccoidea)
These hemipterans produce sweet honeydew just like Aphids, hence their attractiveness for the ants.
