Not uncommonly all black, and no other species in the region ever is, so C. pennsylvanicus.

Well...
Difficult to be conclusive with this minor worker. On one hand, hairy and mattish gaster seems to exclude C. nearcticus, and to match with C. pennsylvanicus. But this latter should have more reddish legs. Therefore, a third species cannot be excluded. An extensive knowledge of New England fauna would be needed.

 
Local species
I'll have to see if I can get one of the local ant experts to take a look at some of these ants.
