Any chance this is Pterallast
Any chance this is Pterallastes thoracicus? I can't quite see the relevant wing veination, so this is just a guess.

(I can't tell if what I'm seeing on the abdomen is a yellow stripe, though, or just a band of yellow hairs on the side)

I was about ready to stumble in and embarrass myself by saying "Merodon equestris" until I double-checked and saw this post:

Silly bulb flies - I swear they look like every single fuzzy syrphid ever.

(it's harder to tell on this guy, since we can't see the back femur)

 
This one has a proportionally thinner body than others.
Others look very Eristalis-like to me, but maybe that's just me.
