tiny black beetles - Pachyschelus purpureus

tiny black beetles - Pachyschelus purpureus
London, Ontario, Canada
May 18, 2004
Length about 3 mm; two individuals resting but not feeding on leaf of ash (Fraxinus). Same species seen 28 May resting on elder (Sambucus). Resembles drawing of Pachyschelus sp. (Buprestidae) here (distally expanded tibiae are evident in my photo) and the photo of P. secedens here but that species doesn't occur in Ontario, according to the Natural Heritage Information Centre. Anyone recognize these?

P. purpureus?
Pretty certain this is Pachyschelus purpureus. Larvae are leaf miners, and the adults, while common, are easily overlooked, or dismissed as something else (like hister beetles, eh?:-). Nice work paying attention to the "small stuff!" Keep it up.

P. purpureus?
Thanks, Eric; purpureus is one of 3 Pachyschelus species in Ontario. I haven't seen the others and didn't come across these guys again after May.

Sure
This is P. purpureus purpureus - the white markings tell all. The other species are either all black, all blue OR bicolored, elytra blue and pronotum black.
