Large black fly -
Xylocopa sonorina
Altadena, Los Angeles County, California, USA
November 26, 2013
Size: Approx 1in
Found this specimen on the driveway (apparently dead). Is this a bot fly? My 2 year old asked if it's a turkey.

(female) this is a good place to teach that child about turkeys..and to love those turkeys and have appreciation for nature in all its many shapes and sizes..we have hundreds of thousands of photos here all arranged in their familys genus and species just use the search..my granddaughter and I bug every time we meet up..and she has learned at 5 to put things to family...better than reading some silly kids book..welcome to bugguide!

That would be a bee.
But appearance and posture certainly do suggest a bot fly.

Thanks Ron.
That seems really obvious to me now, but a google search gets you thinking (and later feeling foolish). We have a nearby hive of honey bees - is it possible that this individual may have been attacked by the other species? Are they typically hostile to other bees?

This looks like a carpenter bee (
Xylocopa
) to me - I don't think they're usually aggressive against other bees, but the males can be territorial about defending their nest sites.
Cute turkey!

Valley carpenter is likely.
Male is brown and resembles a little lion. Female doesn't seem to interact with honey bee - fairly unusual! - from what I've seen.
