Oh! I said. (No lie; that actually happened.)
That was a startling comparison, plus the other poster shared my buprestid guess.

Thanks, Jim. I'm starting to dig around under bark and intrigued by what's happening so far.

 
I used to ignore the tiny ones.
Now that I have my super-duper, free, adapted closeup lens ripped out of a defunct photocopier, plus Canon Ringlight flash attachment, I tend to get most excited about the tiniest subjects.

 
I have my limits
One is self-imposed: I don't take prisoners. But I'm learning I may have to, as there are things I want to shoot that are near impossible to image in the wild.

The other is vision. I can barely resolve some of the small things I'm seeing now. Guess the answer for that is a magnifying glass.

I have a 50mm lens I can reverse on my 105mm macro, but haven't used it yet. There's a good chance I'll need focusing rails first, as I ain't all that steady and depth of field is non-existant.
