Odontocorynus umbellae ? - Odontocorynus
Allison Park, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA
October 11, 2011
Just getting acquainted with weevils so not confident but looks right. I see references to a "scutellum album" in connection with this species, can anyone tell me what album means in this context? Thanks!

Moved from Odontocorynus.

The genus looks sound; 'album' means 'white' (and the scutellum does appear white here).

Moved from Snout and Bark Beetles.

Thank you Blaine
I wouldn't have guessed that.

albumine is the protein from egg whites
albino is another common word of the same origin; album was originally a book of white paper for drawing
a less awkward epithet describing the same character would be alboscutellatus

Ah yes
I wish I had learned a little Latin in my youth...
