Bombyliid 2 - Hemipenthes sinuosa

Bombyliid 2 - Hemipenthes sinuosa
San Bernardino Mts., San Bernardino National Forest, San Bernardino County, California, USA
August 13, 2012
Size: ~1cm.
Can this guy be id'd from this one ventral view? The other shots I have are edge-on and pretty useless. It is on Eriastrum saphirinnum.

Moved
Moved from Hemipenthes.

r1 entirely infuscated except for tip; r2+3 has a color spot at tip; no crossvein between R4 and R2+3 = H. sinousa.

Ron's right, as usual!

Aw, shucks!
As Mac Davis once said, "It's hard to be humble..."

Thanks, Kelsey, for the ego boost, which comes in handy right about now.

Just calling it like it is :^
Just calling it like it is :^) (I didn't mention it on the other moves, but you were right on those H. sinuosa as well...)

I'll bet my string is nearly out.
But maybe not. I was much more conservative assigning IDs to these critters which I didn't know as well as syrphids.

Thanks, guys,
Bob

Our pleasure, Bob.

Moved
Moved from Bee Flies.

Hemipenthes sinuosa - easier than you might think.
Half a wing here, half a wing there. That nails the veins (ouch!), and the distinctive-but-not-exclusive "meatball" markings near the wingtips complete the picture.
