BugGuide.Net Back Online

For those that noticed the site was down for a few hours this afternoon, here's the scoop.

I don't know exactly what happened, but somehow quite a few files were mysteriously deleted from a key directory. I was using the system around the same time to evaluate some log analysis software. My assumption is that somehow I did it, although I can't imagine how. There is no indication of drive failure and the fact that all the files were in one directory tree (albeit somewhat randomly chosen), leads me to believe it was caused by software.

I had to reinstall a few applications, but the OS itself and the BugGuide.Net site all seem unaffected. I'm somewhat nervous about this, but I don't think it warrants any further action at this point. I continue to backup up the BugGuide.Net data every night. If something really bad happens the worst case will be rebuilding a new server from a backup. Since I did that back in September when the first server died, I know that I can recover from that situation.

Keep your fingers crossed and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Glad we're back!
I noticed the absence this evening (remember, in Europe we're always ahead of you guys ;-) ) but I am happy that apparently nothing got lost.

Though we do not celebrate it here (maybe not ahead in everything :-) ): Happy Thanksgiving!

Paul
