Canthon imitator

Canthon imitator
Rancho La Lomitas, Starr County, Texas, USA
October 21, 2006
Size: 14 mm
Rolling dung near a stable, size estimated. The species is presumably Canthon imitator, according to Mike Quinn, see Texas Entomology.

This photograph was taken during a field trip as part of the 2006 Texas Butterfly Festival in Mission, Texas. (Photo taken at the Rancho La Lomitas preserve. Many thanks to the Trevinos for their hospitality.)

probably
There are 7 spp. of Canthon (Canthon) in Texas. Maybe Mike can confirm. Great shots!

C. imitator, likely
Well, we saw this batch at the same location:

and Mike determined that those were C. imitator, based on size. Mike got a consultation from Ed Riley at TAMU. (Mike Quinn and I exchanged a couple of e-mails on these beetles.)

I am assuming here that the roller was the same species. That could be incorrect--I presume Mike will have an opinion.
