Basilica Spider? - Leucauge argyra

Basilica Spider? - Leucauge argyra
Naples, Collier County, Florida, USA
December 19, 2012
I suspect that this orb weaver is a Basilica Spider (Mecynogea lemniscata) but I'm really not sure. The web was among dead twigs.

The image on the left
is an Orchard spider, as is yours. The image on the right is a Basilica

Basilica versus Orchard
The reason I thought it was a basilica is that when I clicked on the first image, it said Basilica - Leucauge argyra. Thanks for solving the mystery.

Wondering if it isn't Leucauge
Leucauge argyra rather than basilica

Leucauge
It very well could be. In many ways, this spider resembles Leucauge venusta, but the coloring seemed wrong to me. That is why I guessed Mecynogea lemniscata. But, now I can see from your photograph that M. lemniscata has much larger spines on the legs. My photographs do look a lot like the Leucauge argyra photo you have attached. I was not aware of L. argyra. I also didn't realize that Leucauge spp were basilica spiders. The reference I am using calls them orchard spiders. I am very new at spider identification and appreciate your help.
