another idea: Ernobius?

good idea!
An anobiid is a good thought. The general habitus directed me from that ID initially. The antennae sure look anobiid-like. Or ptinid-like. Or whatever it is this month.

victim of vicious clubectomy

ouch. no idea, guys.
best guess, ptylodactylid [although doesn't look like either of the 2 CA genera]; the nondescript dorsal habitus is the best match for Dasytinae, but the special metatarsus rules those out, i guess.
one of those cases where i had to go thru half a dozen superfamilies for inspiration, and came out empty. the solution, i'm afraid, will be disappointingly simple ))))))))
a lame question: any hints about habitat? wet/periaquatic?

Melandryidae?
looks like a melandryid to me but i don't know what's out west.

odd one for sure...
I too am at a loss. I've been going through genera on your 'wish list' looking for gaps, also coming up empty.

One thing on your wish list I cannot find images of is the Californian omethid genus, Symphyomethes. Do we know of an omethid specialists who can look at it and offer an opinion (if only to rule it out???).

There are also a couple western scraptiid genera missing: Pectotoma and Neoscraptia.

Not sure on habitat...
... but found near the porch light at night; although there is large shallow lake nearby, which can be seen in the photo on my profile page.

False Flower Beetle??
Scraptiidae, would be my first thought...
