Found among the roots of a Morrow's honeysuckle bush I had just dug up.

Yes. Petaserpes ?cryptocephal
Yes. Petaserpes ?cryptocephala (Polyzoniida: Polyzoniidae). In Sept., I collected, but subsequently lost (slipped through my fingers and I couldn't find it in the leaves), an individual in Berkshire Co. east of Pittsfield.

Shelley 1997 lists Petaserpes
Shelley 1997 lists Petaserpes cryptocephalus as the species in Massachusetts. He lists a record from Franklin County, also at the end of September, so it seems you're pretty spot on with your sighting!
