Caterpillar - Eriocampa ovata

Caterpillar - Eriocampa ovata
Paavola Wetlands Preserve, Houghton County, Michigan, USA
August 30, 2013
I found this caterpillar underneath a Speckled Alder leaf. When it felt disturbed, it would curl up
in a ball. The white fluff on its' body seemed to come off easily when I accidently touched it. There
was a wetland nearby, but the alders were not in the actual wetland, but still in a moist area. I took
the photo about 2:00 p.m. The location is in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan near Lake Superior.
Does anyone have an idea what this is?

There are sawfly larvae
that hide under alder leaves

Maybe a sawfly larva?
