P. furcillata or marginata? -
Physocephala furcillata
a few kilometers north of Pinawa, Manitoba, Canada
July 10, 2013
I can't decide between furcillata & marginata though I am leaning towards P. furcillata.

DeeDee, I agree w/ P. furcillata here
I've been working on
Physocephala
for a while now, studying images and comments on BugGuide and elsewhere, and earnestly cross-referencing with as much of the literature as I can find...recently focusing especially on
furcillata
,
marginata
,
tibialis
and
sagittaria
. (Linked epithets in previous sentence take you to BG info pages for the species...where you'll find references and much more. I've been refining and adding a lot of content to those pages!!)
Unfortunately, I still haven't found any good curated reference images for
sagittaria
yet...though I took two not-so-great photos of pinned specimens of that species recently, while studying those available at the Cal Academy of Science and Essig Museum collections. But
P. sagittaria
is an (uncommon?) eastern species, and those two western museums...though venerable...lack broad series for it (in fact, they had very few).
Anyway, as John R. intimated in his recent comment below, nearly everything I mentioned under
this recent post
applies to your post as well...except your image does not show the pale facial grooves (which are presumably one of the more salient characters). And I can
almost
make out what
might be construed
as
a semblance
of the
pollinose markings associated with
marginata
on the side of the thorax between the wing base and middle leg.
But overall, the suite of visible characters clearly indicates
P. furcillata
here. And it's nice to get a post from relatively far "out west" near Winnepeg :-)

While a I can't ID it
I was just reading this helpful post -
that has a nice diagnostic description of Physocephala furcillata.
