I know exactly what you mean
no two of these moths are exactly alike, and there are conflicting identifications all over the internet (and I suspect a few wrong ones published in books too). Without specimens to examine in person, I can only say "I think I've got them right" here on BugGuide, but have to add the qualification that some of them probably are wrong.

I would say it's a Clover Looper

My initial inclination but the more I studied images of similar species , the more confused that I got.
