Ichneumon Wasp - Limonethe maurator

Ichneumon Wasp - Limonethe maurator
Greenwood County, South Carolina, USA
October 29, 2004
This wasp was pretty active and didn't pose for a good shot. Hopefully the red-orange abdomen and legs, plus the multicolored antennae will make it distinctive. I don't recall size exactly, something a bit longer than an inch (25mm).

Moved from Ichneumoninae.

Moved from Ichneumon Wasps.

The colorful appearance, dorsoventrally depressed abdomen, and large size indicates a wasp in this subfamily.

See reference here.

Eric, thanks for the ID. Too bad we can't narrow down these pesky Ichneumons any further.

Hannah, thanks for the compliment!

Ichneumon wasp
Some ichneumons can be quite large, and convincing mimics of stinging wasps like sphecids and pompilids. The white bands on the antennae give away the identity of this specimen:-)

I'm glad you posted this
as I've been glimpsing a similar one in FL, but it's constantly moving - I'm impressed you got such a good shot as this!
