Cossidae: Prionoxystus robiniae - Prionoxystus robiniae

Cossidae: Prionoxystus robiniae - Prionoxystus robiniae
Grand Forks, Grand Forks County, North Dakota, USA
January 9, 2014
Size: Length ~ 1.8-2.0 cm
I decided to try and rear three of these larvae on carrots. Carrots were drilled (using a 1 cm bit and electric drill) so as to create a blind-end cavity, and larvae were placed in the evacuated cavities, one larva per carrot. As of 09 January 2014, I have but one surviving, overwintering larva. I carefully removed the larva from the old carrot and introduced it to a new carrot. This is the third iteration of this procedure I've performed since July 2013. This larva measures between 18-20 mm in length on 09 January 2014.
