I was hoping this was going to turn out to be the answer to this riddle

but although Phosphila turbulenta gregariously skeletonizes the undersides of Smilax leaves, it appears that the early instars aren't hairy like that.

Phosphila turbulenta
This looks to be Phosphila turbulenta (Noctuidae), but I've never known it to eat anything other than Smilax spp.

I had been pulling smilax vines out of the yaupons, think he just landed there, and after he gave me a few sour looks, disappeared the nex day.. Thank you!
