Tentatively moved to species
It seems the best fit, but time may show this to be wrong. The genus is very confusing, and the species are variable. Also, there appear to perhaps be more species than names at present.

looks like nearly mature nymph
I am guessing that it is P. nigromarginatus, but am not sure.

Shield-backed Katydid
Looks like something in the Subfamily Tettigoniinae (Shield-backed Katydid) perhaps in the genus Pediodectes. Check out:

Agree on subfamily.
I agree on the subfamily, and suspect Steve is right about the genus, too. Does remind me of a wingless version of Capnobotes, but at that size, if it was a nymph, it would at least have noticeable wing pads....
