confirming my hesitation, Dan Heffern says...
..."the Xylotrechus from the Rockies are a problem. It's not X. quercus in my opinion. Several of the species are somewhat variable in regards to the marks on the elytra. Comparing this photo to the photo of some Xylotrechus identified on another web page is very unreliable. Knowing the host plant can also expedite the identification... sometimes. It is extremely important to collect a series of the species in question (males and females) before anybody can speculate on a name. It may be close to X. boditchi, obliteratus or robustus."

I guess this will have to stay at the genus level until I get someone to look at it (in the hand) but, even then it sounds like it still amy be troublesome. Thanks again Dan and V...
