a Gray
This looks like one of the Grays in the tribe Boarmiini, probably an Anavitrinella or Iridopsis species.

Yes to Irdopsis
A few close matches in there. Anavitrinella doesn't seem to be in California at least going by the map anyway. Does not really match any species in the guide. The best matches are unidentified!

Key features seem to be small, oblique ring on centre of hindwing, and interrupted, smudged line through forewing.
