Fritillary Butterfly Identification - Speyeria atlantis - male

Fritillary Butterfly Identification - Speyeria atlantis - Male
Chassell, Houghton County, Michigan, USA
July 14, 2013
I took a picture of this fritillary butterfly at 4:00 p.m. The habitat was on a sandy two-track
where Queen Anne's Lace, Goldenrod and Tansy grew in the track. On each side of the two-track
was a second growth hardwood and coniferous forest. The location is in the western Upper
Peninsula of Michigan near Lake Superior.

Speyeria atlantis
Appears to be a nice image of Speyeria atlantis - Atlantis Fritillary. Aphrodite is also in your area, but shouldn't have as much black around the veins in the forewing, and Aphrodite should have yellow-green eyes rather than blue-gray like in this photo.

Atlantis Fritillary
Thank you Mark. I photographed a Great Spangled earlier and
had that identified. I knew this wasn't as large, but fritillaries
are so hard to identify. Lynn Murphy
