Xanthonia pilosa, dorsal - Xanthonia pilosa

Xanthonia pilosa, dorsal - Xanthonia pilosa
Pena Blanca, Santa Cruz County, Arizona, USA
July 27, 2013
Size: 3.14 mm
Download high resolution image here.

This beetle was collected sweeping foilage with a net near Pena Blanca Lake during Bugguide Gathering 2013. It keys it to Xanthonia in Arnett(1) and matches well the description and habitus image of X. pilosa in Staines 2001(2). The features cited which distinguish X. pilosa from other species are visible in the linked images, "... pronotum with long silky pubescence, pronotum widest behind middle, elytral pubescence composed of erect hairs on every other interval, profemora with ventral tooth small to absent, metasternum punctate laterally, lateral margins of abdomen entire, and last abdominal sternite in male without a large tubercle on each side of middle". I'm not sure if it's male, though. Perhaps someone can confirm this from the exposed tip of its genitia visible in the ventral view. Expert confirmation of species ID is appreciated.

This image is from a CombineZP processed stack of 107 images with a 28 µm step taken with a Nikon CF N Plan 4X/0.13 160/0 mm microscope objective + adapter/extension tube + Nikon D300 camera.

Ed Riley's comment
Ed Riley responded regarding the subject specimen and Mike Quinn's Xanthonia sp. 5, "Although I am not that experienced with this genus is southern AZ, as far as I know there are only a few species found there, and of those, pilosa is the best match for both of these Bugguide entries."
